SPARTA, SPARTERIEOriginally a plain weave straw cloth made from esparto grass and other fibres and used for covering wire hat frames. Used in Japan and several European countries for sun hats. A cotton canvas or matting piece-bleached and given a glazed stiff finish. The weave is usually 3 X 3 matt, 30's warp, 34's weft, 42 ends and 42 picks per inch. -
